What are the Risks of IVF procedure?
Multiple births–IVF increases the chances of multiple births if more than one embryo is planted back in your body. There are many problems related to multiple births like premature labour, and lower birth weight than what a normal fetus has.
MiscarriageThere is not an increased risk of miscarriage in IVF as compared to normal conception per se, but the risk increases with age in IVF. Also, the use of frozen embryos also increases the chance of miscarriage.
Egg retrieval problemsUsing aspirating needles while collecting eggs can sometimes cause bleedings or infections if not done properly. There is also slightly an increased chance of ovarian cancer due to the use of certain medications to stimulate egg growth.
Sometimes when the fertilized egg is put back, it plants itself in the fallopian tube outside the uterus. Moreover, it is a well-known fact that the egg cannot survive outside the uterus and there is no way to continue the pregnancy.

What are the Precautions to be taken after IVF?
Avoid IntercourseAvoid doing sexual intercourse as it helps in preventing vaginal infection and heals woman ovaries after her eggs have been harvested.
No Heavy LiftingDon’t lift heavy weights as it may strain abdominal muscles that have stressed by the IVF procedure. A woman should also stay away from any tough household work.
No bathsDoctors suggest a woman to avoid taking baths for the first two weeks after the IVF procedure as a bath may introduce a foreign substance into the vagina which can cause infection and lead to miscarriage.
No heavy exerciseAvoid any heavy exercise or aerobics after the IVF procedure. Light exercise such as walking is recommended.
Take ProgesteroneIt is necessary that woman have a proper amount of progesterone in her body after ovulation to maintain pregnancy. Your body produces progesterone, but the doctor prescribes artificial progesterone to make sure that appropriate levels of the hormone are maintained during this time.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, drugs, and smoking and stay away from sunbaths and swimming.
It is very important to follow the doctor’s advice once you have undergone IVF. Just take precautions and leaves all other worries behind.
